5 tips to take the 'there's not enough time in a day' and make it a few extra hours for whatever fills your cup.
Time is our most valuable tool, yet it seems to disappear without being used. Especially when there are those of us balancing 2 important full-time careers: Motherhood, and entrepreneurship. Choosing to engage in our profession often leaves us feeling a failure at home, and vice versa. Take these 5 daily engagement tips, and transform your time into your most valuable tool.
Tip #1 - Focus on Productivity
No, I don't mean be busy, I mean be productive. Use that 1 hour before the kids get up and that 2-hour nap to really focus on taking steps toward your goals. Consider using the SMART goal-setting process, and breaking it down into 3-4 hour daily windows of achievement.
Tip #2 - Commit
Commit to your time, and use it intentionally. Did your schedule call for one hour of dedicated learning time with your little one? Then use it for learning. Just one hour of dedicated play time has so many benefits for your little one.
"Playing with your child for an hour can have many benefits. It can help build your child’s self-esteem, provide opportunities for them to learn new skills, and strengthen the bond between you and your child." - Christina Pay
Tip #3 - Time Block
You may already be familiar with this one in a professional atmosphere, but the idea applies to much more than a traditional work week. Time blocking is an effective tool for creating balance. Learn more about time-blocking here: Time Blocking for Productivity in Motherhood (bizsaavymom.com)
Tip #4 - Set Boundaries
This has always been the hardest for me. I was raised with the 'If you have an extra hour, and you're not using it to reach that goal then you must not want it enough' mindset. The reality is, that there are many things that I want, and by using time effectively, I can commit to putting time into everything. So what that means is, when I have met my time boundary for work, it is time to put it away and switch gears.
Tip #5 - Respect the Boundaries
This might seem like a repeat, but it deserves its own space. Setting your work boundary, and respecting it really means turning off the computer, and the notifications, and jumping into the next block of time. By doing this, not only will you accomplish additional tasks and goals in your career, but you will find yourself making more memories with your loved ones, and feeling more refreshed. What's even better, is that time away often makes us more productive and more energetic about the task at hand.
MOMBOSS your time
Manage it like a mother, own it like a boss. By making these five little changes, you will find yourself feeling like you have much more of it. The eight-hour work day will seem longer than needed (and it is, but we will talk more about that in a different post), and the evening hours will suddenly be filled with memories of laughter and love.
