Time Blocking for Productivity in Motherhood

Samantha Hall

Time Blocking is an effective productivity management tool. Most commonly, time blocking is encouraged to be used in the traditional 8-hour work day to drive production and manage priorities, however, when used correctly, it is extremely valuable in all lifestyles.

Time management is one of the hardest skills to develop, it takes practice, and with the constant ebb and flow of life, this practice isn't consistent with a lot of repetition. That's what makes time blocking such a powerful tool. You can build your to-do list into a flowing schedule, manage the priorities of tomorrow, and make split changes to your day when the unexpected happens like a sick kiddo or a broken washer.

I use this idea of flexible time-blocking in multiple ways over a given week. Some days, I am home with my family managing the household, the kids, and my business. On other days, I am in our retail business for 9 hours and have to split my priorities based on open hours. In both scenarios, I have to prioritize and set dedicated time aside to: maintain personal health, dedicate time to my children and my husband, analyze, develop, and execute business plans, keep my sanity, and tidy the house.

Prior to time blocking, I simply compromised my personal health and my sanity. By adding this idea of a flowing to-do list, I have been able not only to complete my to-do lists every day, but to execute each task with intention, improve my quality of work, and reduce my stress and anxiety. The idea of work-life balance is built into the example time-block schedule for a dual-priority day.

It's time to put some time back into your day for self-love, and you don't have to compromise on anything else while doing it.
